Danilo scores late to lead Real Madrid past Bayern Munich in ICC

A 79th-minute goal by Danilo earned Real Madrid a 1-0 International Champions Cup win over Bayern Munich in New Jersey. After being outplayed in the first half, Zinedine Zidane's side were the better team after the break and did enough to edge past their opponents and former manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The game's decisive moment came out of nothing as right-back Danilo, who had come on for Dani Carvajal in the 62nd minute, dribbled without pressure to within 25 yards of Bayern's goal before cutting inside and unleashing a left-footed drive beyond goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, who appeared to be wrong-footed by the shot.

With Cristiano Ronaldo recovering from injury, Gareth Bale still on holiday following Euro 2016 and Karim Benzema not fit enough to feature, Madrid nonetheless fielded a strong starting XI, featuring the likes of Sergio Ramos, James Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata, in their last preseason game before the UEFA Super Cup vs. Sevilla on Aug. 9.

Bayern, meanwhile, were without German internationals Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller, as well as Robert Lewandowski, but did hand another start to U.S. international Julian Green four days after he scored a hat trick against Inter Milan. Also in the Germans' lineup was former Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso.

In a first half dominated by the Bundesliga champions, David Alaba struck the post with a 25th-minute free kick after Arturo Vidal was fouled, before Green went close three minutes later.

The striker took a left-wing cross from Juan Bernat in stride only to see his left-footed shot saved by Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, who was called into action again 12 minutes before half-time when he dived to his left to push away Thiago's long-range effort.

Madrid's first chances of note did not come until well into the second half. In the 59th minute, left-back Marcelo did well to win possession midway inside Bayern's half and drove forward before finding Morata in space on the left of the penalty area. The striker cut inside but curled a shot beyond the far post of Bayern goalkeeper Ulreich.

Two minutes later, Isco went even closer when his curling shot from 25 yards beat Ulreich but struck the post.

With a penalty shootout 11 minutes away, Danilo made the breakthrough to secure Madrid's second straight preseason win. Bayern, meanwhile, fell to their first defeat in six warm-up games.
