Málaga 1-1 Osasuna

Former Arsenal midfielder Fran Merida secured a point for promoted Osasuna in a 1-1 draw against Malaga at La Rosaleda.

Playmaker Juanpi gave Juande Ramos' Malaga the lead with a neat 56th-minute goal but substitute Merida, who moved to Pamplona from Huesca this summer, levelled the scores with five minutes to go of their LaLiga opener.

The first 45 minutes of the Spanish top-flight season were a slow-burner to say the least, with neither side creating an opening until the 38th minute.

That was when Osasuna goalkeeper Nauzet Perez made a smart save at his near post after Malaga forward Sandro poked Keko's right-wing cross goalwards.

Malaga dominated the ball with little end product in the first half but almost went into the interval behind when on-loan Real Madrid defender Diego Llorente misjudged the flight of a long ball forward in the 42nd minute to allow Oriol Riera through, but home goalkeeper Carlos Kameni got down well to push his low shot wide.

The second half got off to an equally low-key start before Malaga moved ahead with a well-worked goal 10 minutes in.

Juanpi fed the ball wide to Jony on the left and raced into the area, with Jony timing the return ball to perfection to allow the Venezuela-born midfielder to sweep a low shot past Nauzet at his near post.

Brazilian forward Charles, who had replaced Keko at half-time, created an opening after 65 minutes by brilliantly bringing a long ball into the box under control but Nauzet raced out and blocked his effort basketball-style.

Sandro then blasted one off target in the 75th minute before the visitors struck back.

Jaime Romero played a neat one-two with Miguel de las Cuevas and sent a low cross in from the right. Llorente was unable to clear and Merida, despite losing his balance, was able to steer a close-range shot past Kameni.

Malaga had one final chance as the ball ricocheted kindly to substitute Chory Castro but no one was able to get a decisive touch to his cross.
