Griezmann nets late winner as Atletico Madrid edge Rostov

Antoine Griezmann grabbed a stoppage-time winner as Atletico Madrid maintained their 100 per cent record in Champions League Group D with a 2-1 win over Rostov at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Griezmann opened the scoring with his first goal of the Champions League season but they were pegged back almost immediately by Iran international Sardar Azmoun.

And just as it looked like Diego Simeone's side were going to be frustrated, Griezmann popped up with the last-gasp winner.

Griezmann had the first real opportunity of the match in the eighth minute when he brilliantly brought the ball down on his chest but his tame shot was easily saved by Soslan Dzhanaev.

And moments later, Atletico again carved open the visiting defence as Griezmann played Filipe Luis in down the left but his cross was cut out by the Rostov defence.

The Russians had an opportunity of their own after 15 minutes when a fierce 20-yard volley from Christian Noboa was straight at Jan Oblak and he saved comfortably.

Griezmann was a constant thorn in the side of Rostov and he meandered his way past two pedestrian Rostov tacklers and played in Yannick Carrasco but Timofei Kalachev did well to get back and block his shot.

And Carrasco saw another shot blocked before he tamely shot over the bar from 25 yards as Atletico began to dominate possession.

Atletico went ahead in the 27th minute through a sublime piece of opportunism from Griezmann.

A harmless-looking Carrasco ball into the box was touched on by Azmoun and Griezmann instinctively flicked the ball past Dzhanaev.

It only took a minute for the visitors to haul themselves level when Azmoun made amends with a cool finish.

Dmitri Poloz's run exposed the Atletico defence and he slipped in Azmoun, who took one touch before drilling the ball past Oblak from 15 yards.

A neat interchange of passes between Fernando Torres and Griezmann opened up an opportunity for Carrasco but he dallied too long on the ball and the eventual effort was easily blocked.

Diego Godin should have done better in the 36th minute when he was given all the time in the world from a Carrasco corner but he could only plant his free header wide of the target.

And as time wore down on the half Oblak had to be sharp to beat away a 30-yard drive from Alexandru Gatcan after a free kick from Fedor Kudryashov had only been partially cleared.

Atletico started the second period on top and Carrasco's 25-yard effort was easily gathered by Dzhanaev before a close-range header from Torres was blocked by Miha Mevlja.

A Koke effort through a crowded box only needed a touch but Godin just could not get on the end of it as it agonisingly rolled out for a goal kick.

Atletico were beginning to get frustrated by a well-drilled Rostov defence as they struggled to create any real clear-cut opportunities and were restricted to long-range efforts.

A neat ball over the top from Kevin Gameiro found Torres but he was forced wide and the resulting tame shot did not trouble Dzhanaev.

Griezmann tried his luck from distance but it was another comfortable stop for Dzhanaev as Atletico ran out of ideas as time whittled down.

But Atletico snatched victory two minutes into stoppage time when a long ball into the box from Koke brushed off the head of Gatcan and fell to Griezmann who lifted the ball over Dzhanaev and into the net.

The assistant referee's flag immediately went up to signal offside but Scottish referee Craig Thompson, after consulting with his fellow official, ruled the goal onside much to the dismay of the visiting defence.
