Borussia Dortmund unable to close gap on Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich maintained their five-point advantage over Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga as the top two shared a 0-0 draw at the Westfalenstadion.

Arturo Vidal came the closest to scoring when he struck the hosts' crossbar in the second half, but that was far from an isolated occasion with both teams creating numerous openings in an exciting stalemate.

Thomas Tuchel's men gave as good as they got, but they could not find the goal that would have seen them reduce the arrears to two points, although the signs are the title race is still going to go down to the wire.

Dortmund had a chance on the counter-attack following the first corner of the game in the third minute, but Marco Reus' shot was blocked after Henrik Mkhitaryan had set up the opportunity.

It set the tone for what was to be an end-to-end encounter, full of chances, but no end product.

Almost immediately, Bayern were back down at the other end with Thomas Muller missing a chance he would normally be expected to score, volleying wide from 15 yards out.

The game was being played at a relentless pace, and that made it just the kind of occasion Dortmund forward Aubameyang relishes. He burst away from Joshua Kimmich to carry another Mkhitaryan pass into the penalty area, but his angled shot was pushed away by Manuel Neuer.

Vidal turned a Douglas Costa cross wide before Erik Durm shot into the side-netting, then Reus was denied an attempt at goal by Kimmich, who made a fine last-gasp tackle after the Germany international's first touch let him down.

There was no let-up, though, and it was Bayern's turn to launch the next break which saw Douglas Costa put clean through on Roman Burki's goal, but the Dortmund custodian stood up to him and made the save.

Arjen Robben curled in one of his trademark left-footed shots, which Burki saved, before the Dutchman fired a low shot wide as more chances went begging.

It was a similar story in the second half with Mkhitaryan replicating Muller's miss early in the first half before Vidal brought a fine reflex save out of Burki, who turned the Chilean's effort onto the crossbar.

Franck Ribery came on for Bayern, while Adrian Ramos was sent on by Tuchel with the first sign of tired legs, and a slowing pace.

Ramos got his first sight of goal with just a few minutes left, but he headed Aubameyang's deep cross wide of Neuer's goal.

It proved to be the last opportunity of a fast-paced game which lived up to its pre-match billing in everything but goals, with Bayern probably most relieved to come away unscathed from a side who appear set to push them all the way for the title this season.
