Fierro pounces on Campestrini's howler to steal Chivas win

GUADALAJARA -- Chivas defeated Puebla 3-2 in the Liga MX Clausura on Saturday, but the game will be remembered for one thing: Carlos Fierro's winning goal.

Chivas had gone in 2-0 down at halftime in Estadio Chivas, but managed to come back to 2-2 and were chasing the three points, when Fierro struck in bizarre fashion.

In the 93rd minute and with the time almost up, Puebla keeper Cristian Campestrini attempted to wind down the seconds by rolling the ball onto the floor in his own penalty area. Unbeknownst to him, 22-year-old Fierro was lurking behind him, waiting to pounce.

Fierro did just that, stealing the ball from Argentine Campestrini's reach, then rounding the keeper to finish and send Estadio Chivas into raptures.

"The last play I honestly had nothing left," Fierro told Chivas TV after the match. "I was leaning on the post and I saw the keeper let the ball out and thought: 'Here is my opportunity to rob it and then put it in.'"

Goals from Federico Gonzalez and Edgar Duenas had given Puebla a shock first half lead, but Alan Pulido pulled one back 10 minutes after half-time and Osvaldo Centurion put the ball into his own net to level the score in the 74th minute.

"We couldn't be happier," said Fierro. "We gifted them the first half. At half-time Matias Almeyda told us to flick the switch and remember what we are capable of: In the second half that Chivas will be fighting for the title."

Chivas moved top of Liga MX with the victory, but will drop to second should Toluca defeat Pumas on Sunday in round 13 of matches in the Clausura.
