Lawrence fires Jamaica past Mexico with late winner in Gold Cup semis

Jamaica beat Mexico 1-0 with a superb Kemar Lawrence free kick in the 87th minute on Sunday to see the Reggae Boyz through to the Gold Cup final.

Andre Blake's stellar Gold Cup continued in the 12th minute as the Jamaica goalkeeper kept out a Jesus Duenas strike that took a wicked deflection and then made a save on the rebound attempt from Erick Torres.

And Blake was at it again in the 24th minute, denying a Torres header from close range after the Houston Dynamo striker was set up with a perfect ball in from Elías Hernández.

Jesus Corona then answered his opposite number with a stretched-out, diving save to turn away Jermaine Taylor's well-struck free kick in the 38th minute.

Ricardo Williams had the best chance of the opening minutes of the second half, but his right-footed shot from a Romario Williams assist went right to Corona in the Mexico goal.

Mexico pushed for their opener and it almost came in the 65th minute, but Jesus Gallardo's thunderous free kick was punched away from danger by Blake to keep the score level at 0-0.

Damion Lowe was next to have a chance for Jamaica, but his goal-bound header from a Owayne Gordon cross was pawed away by Corona.

But with penalties looming, Lawrence's curling free kick caught Corona flat-footed and put Jamaica into its second-consecutive Gold Cup final after losing to Mexico in 2015.

Jamaica will face the United States, who beat Costa Rica on Saturday night, in the final in Santa Clara on Wednesday.
