Chivas beats Toronto FC in penalty-kick thriller to win CONCACAF Champions League

Chivas beat Toronto FC 4-2 on penalty kicks to win the CONCACAF Champions League and book a spot in the team's first-ever Club World Cup in December, after the two-legged final finished 3-3 on aggregate.

The hosts went into the match with a 2-1 aggregate lead from last week's first leg at BMO Field in Toronto, having never lost a home match to a MLS side in club history.

An all-action opening 15 minutes saw Toronto nearly score first, when Jozy Altidore forced a save from Rodolfo Cota after a Marky Delgado through ball had pulled the Chivas keeper off his line.

But it was Chivas that struck first right before the 20-minute mark when Orbelin Pineda deftly chipped a shot past Alex Bono after Rodolfo Pizarro sliced open the Toronto back line with a perfect pass into the penalty area.

Needing two goals to level the aggregate score, Toronto found its first minutes later. Altidore redirected a Nicolas Hasler cut-back pass into Cota's net following a penalty area scramble to trim the Chivas lead to 3-2 over the two legs.

Sebastian Giovinco added a second for Toronto right before half-time -- and just a minute after being booked for dissent -- beating Cota at the near post with a nice individual effort to send the teams to the dressing room tied 3-3 on aggregate.

Second-half until substitute Jesus Godinez nearly had Chivas back in front on the hour mark, but his low line drive from just outside the area hit Bono's post square on and bounced away from danger.

Chivas continued to pressure the Toronto defense, with Javier Lopez curling a well-hit shot over Bono's net and Angel Zaldívar missing just wide of the far post before the match entered its final quarter-hour.

With the match still level on aggregate in the 81st minute, Altidore was substituted for Ager Aketxe after reaching for his hamstring and immediately motioning to the bench following an awkward attempt to win a loose ball.

With penalties approaching, the teams traded quality chances, Giovinco blazed shot just wide of Cota's post and Oswaldo Alanis powered a header right at Bono at the other end.

With the score level on aggregate at the end of the second half, the match went to penalties. Chivas was perfect with all four of its spot kicks -- Oswaldo Alanis, Jesus Godinez, Alan Pulido and Angel Zaldivar all converting -- while misses from Jonathan Osorio and Michael Bradley gave the Liga MX club its first continental title since 1962.

Mexican clubs have won this tournament for the past 13 editions. The last non-Mexican team to win it was Costa Rica's Saprissa in 2005, while Toronto was trying to become the first MLS team to win the CONCACAF title since the LA Galaxy in 2000.
