Jesus Duenas' brace gives Tigres Campeones Cup over Toronto FC

Jesus Duenas scored twice for Tigres UANL as the Liga MX side beat Toronto FC 3-1 to win the inaugural Campeones Cup on Wednesday night.

Toronto FC earned its place in the contest by winning MLS Cup last December, while Apertura 2017 winners Tigres claimed a spot in the match by virtue of their Campeones de Campeones win over Clausura 2018 champions Santos.

Duenas' first goal on the night came in the 36th minute after he cradled a through ball from Juninho to connect off a difficult angle.

Toronto's best first-half chance had come minutes earlier when Jay Chapman's header off Sebastian Giovinco's corner kick ricocheted off the bar.

The MLS side suffered a setback five minutes before halftime when Giovinco, the league's 2015 MVP, began to cramp and was substituted off for Lucas Janson.

Duenas' second goal in the 64th minute came off a strike from distance that caught the bottom left corner.

The Mexican club went up 3-0 two minutes later after Toronto defender Eriq Zavaleta's defensive gaffe gifted an own-goal that sent goalkeeper Bono tumbling into the net.

Toronto responded with several opportunities inside Tigres' box -- including Jonathan Osorio's shot that bounced off teammate Marco Delgado -- but ultimately were unable to break a solid Tigres defense.

Janson salvaged a score for the home side in the 85th minute with a penalty conversation following Duenas' hand ball in the box.

The game's timing was a major talking point during its buildup as Toronto continues to fight for its MLS playoff life and Tigres set to face city rival Monterrey on Sunday.

Wednesday night's match was the third clash between the two sides this year. Toronto beat Tigres on aggregate in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals in March.
