Manchester United exit FA Cup to Wolves after Jimenez, Jota goals

Wolves knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup at the quarterfinal stage with a 2-1 win at Molineux to book a spot in the semifinals.

A back-and-forth first half was short on chances, but Wolves nearly found their opener just before the break when Sergio Romero was forced off his line to keep Diogo Jota out on a nice counter-attacking move by the hosts.

Romero was called into action early in the second half, diving up and to his left to palm away a Raul Jimenez header following a corner that looked certain to find the back of the net.

Wolves would find their deserved opener on 70 minutes when Jota cut in from the left side and picked out Jimenez, who turned and fired a shot past Romero to make it 1-0.

Minutes later, Jota doubled Wolves' lead on a charging run from midfield, turning defender Luke Shaw around and then firing past a helpless Romero at the near post.

United had a red card for defender Victor Lindelof overturned by VAR and Marcus Rashford pulled a goal back in added time but there was no time left to mount a comeback and they fell to a second defeat in a row for the first time since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as manager in December.

Despite the late scare, it was a fully deserved victory for Wolves who edged the first half and utterly dominated the second to extend their unbeaten streak at home to seven games in all competitions.

With their fans singing "We're on our way back," Wolves savoured another huge Cup victory after knocking out Liverpool in the third round and will now have a Wembley semifinal to add to their many highlights in a hugely impressive first season back in the Premier League.
