Tottenham boost Champions League qualification bid with rout over Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur stepped up their Champions League qualification bid as they rallied to an emphatic 5-1 victory over Newcastle United on Sunday.

Fabian Schar's free-kick handed Newcastle the lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 39 minutes, but Ben Davies struck back before half-time. Spurs pulled away from Newcastle with a glut of second-half goals from Matt Doherty, Son Heung-Min, Emerson Royal and Steven Bergwijn to secure all three points.

Sunday's result means Spurs moved into fourth spot on goal difference ahead of rivals Arsenal, who have two games in hand and face Crystal Palace on Monday.

Newcastle are 15th with 31 points, nine clear of the relegation zone.

"I like to be honest and clear in every moment with my players. I arrived in November and it was difficult to set a target for the season. I found it difficult in many aspects," Spurs boss Antonio Conte said.

"The work we are doing is paying off. It is important for me as I see the commitment of my players every day. A good result is important for the trust in the work we are doing."

Spurs entered the clash with Newcastle looking to pick up where they left off having won four of their last five Premier League games before the international break.

Schar broke the deadlock on 39 minutes with a well-struck free-kick at opposing goalkeeper Hugo Lloris' near post, but Spurs' Davies netted with a superb glancing header moments later to ensure the scores were level at the break.

Spurs stepped up their intensity at the beginning of the second half as Doherty nodded home following a fast counter-attack to put Conte's side in front. Son doubled Spurs' advantage on 54 minutes when he fired home following a neat cut back.

Newcastle looked in disarray after that, and Emerson got in behind the Newcastle defence put the match to bed with a prodded effort on 63 minutes. Bergwijn added a fifth before the end with a calmly slotted finish past an on-rushing Martin Dubravka.

"Now I have had the work of five or six months, to work and bring my idea of football and mentality... I thank my players. From the first day they've shown commitment and desire to improve," Conte added.

"This league is very difficult to try to be in the race for the Champions League. We want to stay there until the end. We have to try to continue to play this way with intensity, accuracy.
