La WWE informó en un comunicado que el miembro del Salón de la Fama, Gene Okerlund, el entrevistador más reconocido en la historia del entretenimiento deportivo, falleció a los 76 años.
El hijo de Okerlund, Tor Okerlund, le dijo a Prensa Asociada que su padre murió la madrugada del miércoles en un hospital en Sarasota, cerca de su casa en Osprey, Florida, con su esposa, Jeanne, a su lado. Tor Okerlund agregó que su padre, quien había recibido tres trasplantes de riñón, se cayó hace unas semanas "y que [su salud] de alguna manera pasó de mal a peor".
"Mean Gene", como fue nombrado por Jesse "The Body" Ventura, llegó a la fama como entrevistador en la American Wrestling Association (AWA).
