Thomas Muller brace leads Germany in dominant win

Germany recorded their second successive 3-0 win in a comfortable start to their Group C World Cup qualifying campaign.

Thomas Muller bagged a brace while Toni Kroos was also on target for Joachim Low's men, who inflicted an identical defeat on Norway last month and host Northern Ireland in their next qualifier on Tuesday.

The result even flattered the Czech Republic, who were outplayed at Hamburg's Vollksparkstadion and were lucky to get away with conceding only three.

The hosts took the lead in the 13th minute when Mario Gotze's pass was met by Muller, after Mesut Ozil tried to help it on, and the Bayern Munich forward did not need a second invitation as he placed his shot inside the left-hand post.

The goal allowed Germany to settle and stamp their authority on the game, with Julian Draxler screwing a shot wide of the far post soon after.

Muller saw another shot saved by the increasingly busy Tomas Vaclik before a neat one-two between Gotze and Muller set up the former, who dinked a shot over Vaclik but wide of the far post.

Germany got the second goal to make life that little bit more comfortable early in the second half when Kroos placed Joshua Kimmich's pass low into the bottom right-hand corner from just outside the penalty area.

The outstanding trio of Gotze, Muller and Ozil continued to carve out openings and it was the Arsenal midfielder who had the next shot, which took a deflection and looped just over the crossbar.

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was given his first test of the night in the 63rd minute, and he responded well to Borek Dockal's shot.

Two minutes later, any fears that the game might be opened up again were wiped away by Muller who, after scoring two against Norway, added his second against the Czech Republic, turning in Jonas Hector's cross with a side-footed finish from six yards.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan came on to make his first appearance for his country in 11 months with the result secured, even if Dockal once again tested Neuer from distance.

Gundogan set up Benedikt Howedes for a good chance to add a fourth, but the Schalke defender showed why he spends most of his time at the other end of the field with an awkward finish.

Howedes then turned provided for Kimmich, whose header was saved instinctively by Vaclik, who certainly played his part in ensuring Germany scored only three in Hamburg.

The visitors had a goal disallowed for offside with the last kick of the game, but Germany preserved their second straight clean sheet to join Azerbaijan at the top of the group with maximum points from two games.
