Liverpool hit four past Norwich in Prem opener

Liverpool opened their Premier League campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over newly promoted Championship winners Norwich City on Friday night at Anfield.

Last season's Champions League winners were gifted an early lead when Norwich defender Grant Hanley mishit his clearance on a Divock Origi cross and redirected the ball into his own goal.

Liverpool would double their lead before 20 minutes thanks to a silky Mohamed Salah finish after Roberto Firmino had played him in behind the Norwich defence to make it 2-0.

The struggles for Norwich continued in the first half when Virgil van Dijk outmuscled his defender to power home a close-range header and Origi headed home his second to send Liverpool to the dressing room leading by four goals.

Jurgen Klopp's side did get some bad news in the first half as Alisson, who started all 38 games in goal for Liverpool last season, was withdrawn with an apparent injury and replaced by Adrian in the 39th minute. Klopp said after the match it was a calf injury and did not look good.

Teemu Pukki, who led the Championship with 29 goals last season, gave the visiting support reason to cheer just past the hour mark with a clinical finish from an inch-perfect Emiliano Buendía pass to reduce the deficit to three.

Liverpool failed to add to their lead in the second half and will next play Chelsea on Wednesday, Aug. 14, in the UEFA Super Cup that pits the two champions of European play against one another.

Klopp's rampant Reds extended their home unbeaten streak to 41 matches and have won their last 10 Premier League matches in a row.
