Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-2 to win the German Super Cup and add a fifth piece of silverware in 2020. Dortmund had plenty of chances to gain the upper hand, including a spectacular save by Neuer on Haaland's breakaway, but couldn't find their third of the night. Kimmich then snatched the ball in midfield, played a one-two with Robert Lewandowski and had his shot blocked by keeper Marwin Hitz before the ball bounced back off his foot and into the net. U.S. youngsters Giovanni Reyna and Chris Richards were second-half substitutes for their respective sides, with Reyna coming on for Dortmund and Richards making his third senior squad appearance for Bayern. Dortmund made do without Thorgan Hazard, who is injured, while first-choice goalkeeper Roman Burki and winger Jadon Sancho were unwell. Both tested negative for coronavirus. It was the last game before retirement for Bibiana Steinhaus, who in 2017 became the first female referee to oversee men's Bundesliga games.
