Sevilla denied top spot in La Liga after Eibar draw

Sevilla missed the chance to move top of La Liga when they had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Eibar, who finished the match with nine men.

Manager Jorge Sampaoli made eight changes for a return to domestic action on the back of a goalless draw at Juventus in the Champions League as his side looked to go above Barcelona, who romped to a 5-1 win at Leganes in the early kick-off.

However, despite Luciano Vietto putting Sevilla ahead against the run of play midway through the first half, Eibar recovered from the dismissal of goalkeeper Rodriguez Yoel on the stroke of half-time to equalise when Pedro Leon netted from close range.

Eibar captain Dani Garcia was shown straight red card for a foul on Vietto with five minutes left but Sevilla were not able to conjure a winner and are now fourth.

The hosts produced a positive start, with Kike's angled effort being saved and a goalbound-shot from Tiago Bebe blocked on the line.

It was Sevilla, though, who took the lead in the 27th minute when Vietto, on loan from Atletico Madrid, slotted into the bottom corner.

Eibar were reduced to 10 men just before half-time when goalkeeper Yoel took down Joaquin Correa as the forward darted clear down the left but they were level after 63 minutes when Pedro Leon converted a low cross from the right by Antonio Luna.

After Garcia also saw red, Gabriel Mercado and then Ganso failed to convert chances to win the match for Sevilla.
