Luis Gil brilla en su debut y Yankees aplasta a Orioles
NUEVA YORK (AP) -- Luis Gil resolvió seis innings en blanco al debutar dentro de Ligas Mayores, Giancarlo Stanton aportó un jonrón y cuatro empujadas, y los New York Yankees vapulearon el martes 13-1 a los Baltimore Orioles.
Gil (1-0) abrió el encuentro en lugar del astro Gerrit Cole, quien ingresó a la lista de los lesionados tras dar positivo de COVID-19 el lunes.
El dominicano de 23 años causó una buena impresión en su debut. Toleró apenas cuatro sencillos, recetó seis ponches y regaló sólo una base por bolas.
"Lo primero que le pedí a Dios es que me diera mucha fortaleza para lanzar, porque sabía que iba a estar nervioso", indicó Gil. "Afortunadamente escuchó mi voz y me dio la bendición para quitarme los nervios. Estuve totalmente relajado y confié en mí mismo".
Tras admitir un par de hits con dos outs en el cuarto acto, Gil obligó a que DJ Stewart bateara un elevado. El quisqueyano, quien tuvo un récord de 4-1 durante 15 aperturas combinadas en Doble A y Triple A, retiró a sus tres adversarios del quinto acto y luego dejó inmóvil a Austin Hays mediante un slider a la esquina de afuera, poniendo fin al sexto capítulo, cuando había dos corredores a bordo.
Gil fue apenas el octavo lanzador de los Yankees que ha laborado seis innings o más en blanco al debutar en las mayores. Los anteriores fueron Slow Joe Doyle (1906), King Brockett (1907), Tacks Neuer (1907), Pete Wilson (1908), Russ Van Atta (1933), Vito Tamulis (1934) y Sam Militelo (1992).
El pitcher derrotado fue Alexander Wells (1-2).
