Atletico Madrid missed the chance to return to the top of La Liga as two spot-kicks steered Real Sociedad to a 2-0 victory at the Estadio Anoeta.
Diego Simeone's men had the best chance of the first half as Kevin Gameiro hit a post following a swift counter-attack.
However, the home side were good value for their win as first Carlos Vela tucked in from 12 yards in the 54th minute and Willian Jose added a second penalty just over 20 minutes later.
The win drew Sociedad level on points with fifth-placed Villarreal and was their third victory in a row, all without conceding a goal. For Atletico, it was a second defeat in three league matches.
The home side were the first to go close after five minutes when David Zurutuza fired over from the edge of the box after Vela cut the ball back to him from the right-hand side.
Eusebio Sacristan's men dominated possession and territory in the opening 20 minutes, but Atletico grew into the game and looked threatening on the break.
Saul Niguez drew a smart 26th-minute save from Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from an Antoine Griezmann cross and two minutes later the visitors came even closer.
Griezmann, up against his old club, won the ball back high up the pitch and it was funnelled forward to Gameiro, who clipped a shot over the onrushing Rulli but saw it strike the goalkeeper's right-hand post before the home defence cleared.
Sociedad were still in it, though, and it took a wonderful fingertip save from Jan Oblak in the 34th minute to deny Vela as the Mexican cut inside from the right and curled a left-foot shot towards the top corner.
The breakthrough went the hosts' way when Yuri burst forward from left-back and went down under challenge from Gabi, although it was not clear how much contact there was.
Vela's penalty was coolly taken, as he sent Oblak the wrong way and rolled home a left-foot shot.
Vela should have doubled Sociedad's lead but blazed an effort off-target after finding space at the far post, but the second goal did come with 15 minutes to go.
Vela was at the heart of it, twisting and turning his way into the box before he was tripped by Angel Correa. This time Willian Jose took it, and his effort was equally confidently dispatched past Oblak.
Atletico, who had changed their attacking line-up by bringing Fernando Torres on for Gameiro midway through the second half, had late chances to at least cut the deficit.
Yannick Carrasco angled a shot just wide before Rulli was stretched by a curling shot from Griezmann after he made an incisive move from right to left, with Carrasco's cross hacked clear by the home defence.
