Late penalty sees Celta Vigo past Gijon

Iago Aspas' penalty three minutes from time earned Celta Vigo their first win of the season as they overcome Sporting Gijon 2-1 at Balaidos.

Celta defender Hugo Mallo scored his first LaLiga goal of the season in the 66th minute before Duje Cop equalised from the penalty spot with 10 minutes remaining and the sides looked to be sharing the spoils.

However, the former Liverpool forward had the chance to condemn Gijon to their second successive defeat with a spot-kick of his own, which he buried into the bottom left corner to give goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar no chance and take all three points.

The hosts started positively when Theo Bongonda dribbled to the edge of the penalty area and fired a powerful effort goalwards but was thwarted by a great save from Cuellar.

From the resulting corner, Pablo Hernandez should have done better after getting free in the penalty area but could only direct his header way over the bar during a goalless first half.

Mallo changed that 20 minutes after the break, getting on the end of Pione Sisto's cross following neat footwork by the Danish winger to plant the ball into the bottom corner.

Facundo Roncaglia gave the visitors the chance to level when he hauled down Cop in the area, with the Croatian converting from 12 yards.

But Celta had the final say when the referee pointed to the spot for the second time in the match following Fernando Amorebieta's rash challenge and Aspas kept his composure to slot home.
