Bayern control Schalke to widen Bundesliga lead to 10 points

Bayern Munich took another step towards a fourth straight Bundesliga title with a 3-0 win over Schalke.

Robert Lewandowski extended his own lead at the top of the scoring charts with his 26th and 27th goals of the season to put the record champions in control after a difficult first half.

Arturo Vidal scored the third as Bayern opened up a 10-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga over Borussia Dortmund, who host Hamburg on Sunday.

Should the Westphalians fail to win that game, Bayern would need just a point from their trip to Hertha Berlin next weekend to clinch the title with three games to spare.

Schalke, meanwhile, remain outside the top six of the Bundesliga with four games of the season remaining.

Schalke had frustrated derby rivals Borussia Dortmund a week ago, taking a point off them to help Bayern extend their lead at the top.

And they looked intent on slowing down Bayern's charge too early on at the Allianz Arena.

They first frustrated Pep Guardiola's men with destructive tactics before taking more of a risk themselves and almost opening the scoring, only for Medhi Benatia to nick the ball off the toes of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as he was preparing to turn in Junior Caicara's cross.

Leroy Sane nearly set up Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting before, at the other end, Vidal's shot only just missed Ralf Fahrmann's goal.

The pressure began to grow on Schalke and Lewandowski finally made the breakthrough 10 minutes into the second half when he took Vidal's pass down on his chest and, on the turn, shot past Fahrmann.

Lewandowski's second arrived 10 minutes later when the Pole headed in Rafinha's cross, extending his lead over Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the top of the top-scorer list to four goals.

After Sane wasted a chance to cut Bayern's lead in half, Vidal wrapped up the points for the home side when he turned in Franck Ribery's cross.

Vidal was substituted soon after as Guardiola's focus shifted to the midweek DFB-Pokal semifinal tie with Werder Bremen.

The Spaniard, in his final weeks as Bayern coach before heading to Manchester City, also has a Champions League semifinal with Atletico Madrid to look forward to as he seeks to end his spell in Germany by landing the treble.
