A goal deep into second half injury-time from Victor Guzman handed 10-man Pachuca the Liga MX Clausura 2016 trophy on Sunday in Estadio BBVA Bancomer.
Guzman's goal gave Pachuca a 1-1 tie against Monterrey in the second leg of the final and a 2-1 aggregate victory over the two games to lift its sixth Mexican first division title.
Monterrey started out by far the brighter side in a game that was almost the opposite of the 1-0 last Thursday's first leg in Estadio Hidalgo, which Pachuca left disappointed it hadn't scored more.
This time, Pachuca didn't have a shot on target until Guzman's goal, with its only real chance coming in the 71st minute, when Hirving Lozano headed just wide from a corner.
Monterrey dominated apart from that and had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 33rd minute, from the penalty spot, but Colombia international Edwin Cardona sent the ball over the bar.
Pachuca's 43-year-old goalkeeper Oscar "Conejo" Perez was the man-of-the-match and a triple-save five minutes later, first from Rogelio Funes Mori and then Cardona was the highlight for the veteran.
The former Mexico international couldn't do anything about Monterrey's opener when it finally came in the 39th minute, with Dorlan Pabon receiving the ball from a short corner, moving inside and striking a firm shot into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area.
Pachuca were relieved to go into the break just 1-0 down, considering Monterrey had 20 shots (seven on target) in the first 45 minutes, but the home side continued its incessant pressing and attack after half-time.
Los Tuzos' job became even more difficult in the 74th minute, when captain Aquivaldo Mosquera was sent off for blatantly taking down Pabon as he was running through on goal.
But just as it looked Pachuca had hung on for extra-time, Guzman out-jumped United States international Edgar Castillo at the back post from a Emanuel Garcia cross for an unlikely victory.
Omar Gonzalez -- excluded from the U.S. squad for the Copa America Centenario -- had a solid game at center-back for Pachuca and picks up a Liga MX trophy in his first season since joining the club from LA Galaxy.
