Teófimo López prometió montar un espectáculo en el Teatro Hulu del Madison Square Garden.
López, nativo de Nueva York de sangre hondureña, peleó en su ciudad natal por séptima vez en su carrera y ganó todas las peleas anteriores por nocaut.
Sin embargo, esta pelea contra George Kambosos Jr. no siguió esa tendencia. Kambosos Jr. derrotó a López en una gran sorpresa para reclamar el campeonato de peso ligero OMB, FIB, AMB y franquicia CMB.
Kambosos Jr., quien peleó por un título mundial por primera vez en su carrera, se convirtió en el quinto campeón unificado de Australia desde 1960. Fue una decisión dividida, dos jueces anotaron 115-112 y 115-111 para Kambosos Jr. y el tercer juez la anotó para López 114-113.
Después de la pelea, López no rehuyó compartir lo que sentía por la decisión de los jueces. "No me importa lo que digan los demás", dijo López. "Gané esta pelea".
