Israel Jimenez scored the winning penalty for Tigres to take the Liga MX Apertura 2015 championship on Sunday, after a final against Pumas that will go down as a classic.
Pumas won the second leg in Estadio Universitario Olimpico 3-0 after 90 minutes and 4-1 after extra time, leveling the series on aggregate after Tigres' 3-0 win in Thursday's first leg.
Pumas were given little chance of coming back after being completely outplayed in the first leg, but they dominated proceedings against Tigres on Sunday.
France international Andre-Pierre Gignac looked like he had won the game for Tigres in the 103rd minute, when he twisted and shot into the net for Tigres' only goal, but Gerardo Alcoba scrambled in one minute before the end to take the tie to penalties.
Tigres scored all four of their penalties, with Pumas' Javier Cortes having his spot kick saved and Fidel Martinez shooting wide.
Pumas' Eduardo Herrera opened the scoring on the stroke of halftime to give the home fans hope and the belief in the Pumas team -- which needed to win by three goals to force extra time -- visibly grew.
The team came out flying in the second half and coach Guillermo Vazquez took off holding midfielder Alejandro Castro for Ecuadorian winger Fidel Martinez in the 54th. One minute later the substitution paid dividends.
Martinez received the ball on the left flank and curled in a cross that Matias Britos managed to steer past Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman, who slipped as he was attempting to dive towards the ball.
Pumas pushed for the third to take the game to extra time and Tigres coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti made defensive changes to hold onto the aggregate lead.
It didn't work for Ferretti, as substitute Silvio Torales headed in Pumas' third three minutes from the final whistle to extend the match.
Goal scorer Herrera was sent off right before the end of regular time for a late challenge on Antonio Briseno, as he was attempting to poke the ball into the net. Tigres took advantage of their man advantage in extra time and the game looked to be over when Gignac netted.
Tigres invested heavily in their squad ahead of the Apertura 2015 season, bringing in French striker Gignac and Mexican internationals Javier Aquino and Jurgen Damm. The side finished runner-up in the Copa Libertadores back in August.
The win gives Tigres their fourth Liga MX title and second in five years, while Pumas suffered the club's sixth loss in the finals, second-most in Liga MX history.
