JUNIOR FLYWEIGHT/STRAWWEIGHT DIVISION (UP TO 108/105 POUNDS)

1. Akira Yaegashi (25-5)
Japan's Yaegashi, a former strawweight and flyweight titleholder, moved down in weight and won a title in a third weight division as he outpointed Mexico's Javier Mendoza for a junior flyweight belt in a brutal fight in December 2015. Yaegashi made his first defense, on May 8 in Tokyo, against Mexico's unheralded Martin Tecuapetla and won a tough split decision, but he suffered a rotator cuff injury. He returned from the injury for defense No. 2 on Dec. 30 and retained his 108-pound belt by one-sided 12th-round knockout of Thailand's Wittawas Basapean. A mandatory defense against interim titlist Milan Melindo (35-2), of the Philippines, is on tap.

2. Ganigan Lopez (28-6)
In his second shot at a junior flyweight world title, Mexico's Lopez upset Yu Kimura in Japan in March 2016 to claim the belt via majority decision. He made his first defense in his hometown of Mexico City against Filipino mandatory challenger Jonathan Taconing in July and won a clear unanimous decision. Lopez will return to Japan for defense No. 2 when he will defend against Ken Shiro (9-0) in Tokyo.

3. Ryoichi Taguchi (25-2-2)
Since losing a 10-round decision for the Japanese junior flyweight title in August 2013 to Naoya Inoue (now a two-division titleholder and reigning junior bantamweight titlist), Taguchi is unbeaten in eight consecutive fights, including winning a junior flyweight world title and defending it five times. Defense No. 5, however, was a tough one as he battled to a split draw with Venezuela's Carlos Canizales on Dec. 31.

4. Knockout CP Freshmart (15-0)
In December, Thailand's CP Freshmart made his first defense against Japan's Shin Ono, who previously lost a strawweight title shot by decision to Japan's Katsunari Takayama in 2014, and won a lopsided decision in Thailand. Defense No. 2 also came at home as CP Freshmart knocked out Japanese challenger Go Odaira, who was getting his third crack at a world title, in the fifth round on March 1.

5. Hekkie Budler (31-2)

South Africa's Budler, with the sweet nickname of "The Hexecutioner," made four successful strawweight title defenses before losing the belt by close upset decision to Nicaragua's Byron Rojas in March 2016. Budler moved up to junior flyweight and has won both bouts since, including one-sided seventh-round knockout of the Philippines' Joey Canoy on Feb. 4.
